Beginnings

Studio 8 began in Sheung Wan, a quaint and quiet neighborhood of Hong Kong still known to many for it's shop keepers of dried seafood and bird's nest. And there, on the 8th floor of Cleverly and Bonham Strand, Norm Yip made his home and studio. The move to that space was met with great anticipation of things to come, but the immediate news was that of 4 major events: namely, 9-11 in New York, SARS, and the untimely death of Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. Studio 8 was going to have a rough start.

For those that ever visited Studio 8 in those early years, they would recall that it was a very special place. Norm lived there, making it his home and private studio at the same time. Studio 8 held a number of painting exhibitions, including one Buddha Buddha exhibiton with Gavin Tu (Hong Kong) and Neung (Thailand). Some will recall coming to the studio to participate in life drawing classes, in which Norm would hire a life model and twelve eager souls would be drawing away to the sounds of chic lounge music. It was a time when art classes were few and Art Walk was just getting a name for itself.

Philosophy
2008 marked a new space for Studio 8, having moved to Hong Kong island east in the urban industrial neighborhood of Chai Wan. With this new space, it attracted a small yet highly significant expansion for the company. We now have a tight-knit family of individuals with whom we care for with our hearts. We are not about extravagance, nor luxury; we are about caring and passion. That is the driving force to what we do and create. To see you as our client is one thing, but to have geniune care to take you through the project and with what I empathic vision, is what we are aiming to do. We live in the fragile age where the heart is being re-examined. Recognizing that we all have the potential to be better humans, better selves is what Studio 8 pushes forth from the grassroots level of simply listening and sharing. It is worth plenty, if you only take the time to feel. It is self-expression from both the individual and the masses.

Mission
Our aim is to share with our clients and supporters the vision and philosophy that collaboration, creatiity and success is not based on final figures, but in the process of communication, understanding and care. We share with you our expertise as we search for meaningful projects that touch the heart and soul of individuals. So rather than a final figure, we look for common goal of creating a better environment for our workplaces, home, recreation and living. We care about the planet we live on and it's natural resourses. We nourish our minds with freedom, love and respect for ourselves and others. If we can somehow achieve a happier space in our minds and hearts of all, then our mission is accomplished. Our thinking is not short-term, but a long-term relationship.
